2006 Hand Me Down Project
Funded by Vic Health Community Participation Scheme Throughout September 2006, the Bendigo Conservatory came to life with a unique arts project inspired by our local Indigenous flora. The plant life usually on display was removed and in its place an indigenous garden constructed from textiles wire, ceramic and mixed media was installed. Over 60 participants from various community groups and organizations were involved in free workshops in the lead up to the exhibition, as part of the #Art in the Conservatory' program. Two of the groups involved included The Bendigo Indigenous Women's Art Council and Eaglehawk Secondary Indigenous girls art group. The Hand Me Down project allowed the Bendigo Youth Arts Network to develop new working relationships with the Indigenous community The Eaglehawk Secondary school indigenous girls art group will continue due to the success of the project Indigenous community felt a sense of connection to the broader community due to the collaborative nature of the exhibition The non indigenous participants and audience felt the exhibition respectfully engaged our indigenous community and culture The exhibition highlighted the importance of respect for the land and our indigenous landscape
